Which card scheme?

Qualified and approved instructors with experience in your industry

Helping make your industry a safer place

We are accredited by both NPORS (National Plant Operator’s Registration Scheme) and CPCS (Construction Plant  Competence Scheme). This means (dependent on the category of plant you require) that you can choose which accreditation and card scheme suits your business and your customers best.

We have worked with NPORS and CPCS for many years now and our team have valuable experience and knowledge of the workings of each of the schemes. We are here to offer advice and support at any time regarding how the card schemes work and how they can support your business.

The NPORS (CSCS), and the CPCS cards require candidates to complete a CITB Health, Safety & Environment test.  This test can be sat at our very own test centre. Both CPCS and NPORS (CSCS) card schemes also require candidates to complete a relevant SVQ to progress from their red trained operator card to their blue competent operator card. Camilla Training is an SQA approved centre and we also deliver these SVQ’s.

NPORS Construction plant training & testing

Established in 1992, the National Plant Operator’s Registration scheme is now one of the UK’s leading accreditation and registration bodies, working across the construction, industrial, utilities, warehousing and distribution, agricultural, ports and marine sectors.

The scheme consists of the following cards:

  • NPORS Operator card
  • NPORS CSCS cards
    • NPORS CSCS Operator card (red trained operator)
    • NPORS CSCS Competent operator card (blue competent card)

Achieving an NPORS operator card

The NPORS operator card is a record of the training or assessment an individual has undertaken that proves their ability to safely operate an item of plant machinery / equipment.

The achievement of an NPORS operator card is a straightforward process designed to ensure that candidates follow the correct path to achievement. At the same time, it offers employers a credible, flexible and cost-effective alternative plant operator card.

NPORS CSCS card scheme

NPORS is an approved CSCS partner scheme.  Card schemes displaying the CSCS logo are based on the approved standards as mandated by the Construction Leadership Council and like the CSCS scheme, require the holder to gain an N/SVQ and pass the Health and Safety Test.  The NPORS CSCS card should be accepted when presented on site.

Achieving the CSCS Trained operator card

In order to achieve the red trained operator card, candidates must complete:

  • Theoretical and practical tests
  • CITB Health, Safety and Environment test (within 3 months of completing their theory / practical tests)

Achieving the NPORS CSCS competent operator card

in order to achieve the blue competent operator card, candidates must:

  • Hold a current in-date NPORS red trained operator registration or have expired within the last 12 months
  • Complete / provide proof of achievement of the SVQ for the category of plant being applied for
  • Have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the past 2 years

CPCS Construction Plant Competence Scheme

The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) provides skills cards for the plant sector of the Construction and allied industries. It was launched in 2003 and since then over 300,000 cards have been issued across 60 categories of plant and related occupations. The CPCS  Management Committee continually review and amend the Scheme, in light of on-going Industry feedback, and external factors such as the latest occupational health issues, technology advances and new plant types.

The scheme consists of the following cards:

  • CPCS Red trained operator card
  • CPCS Blue competent operator card

Achieving the CPCS red trained operator card:

The CPCS Red Trained Operator Card is issued on successful completion of the CPCS Theory and Practical Technical Tests

To get this card you need to (in this order):

  1. Pass the relevant CITB health, safety and environment test.
  2. Achieve the CPCS theory test (within two years of the CITB health, safety and environment test)
  3. Achieve the CPCS practical test (within six months of the CPCS theory test and within two years of the CITB health, safety and environment test)

Achieving the CPCS blue competent operator card

The Blue Competent Operator Card shows employers that you are competent to operate a particular type of plant. That  you have skills to do the job, the HS&E training needed to do it safely, and real-world experience with a particular type of plant.

Blue Competent Operator cardholders have demonstrated their ability to work unsupervised, and may, in fact be called upon to supervise Red Trained Operator cardholders on the worksite.

To get this card you need to:

Complete / provide proof of achievement of the SVQ for the category being applied for · Pass the relevant CITB health, safety and environment test

Hold a valid red CPCS trained operator card or:

  • Achieve the CPCS theory test (within two years of the CITB health, safety and environment test)
  • Achieve the CPCS practical test (within six months of the CPCS theory test and within two years of the CITB health, safety and environment test)
